Thank You! Congratulations to Consumers Union "Safe Patient Project" for bringing these issues to Congress' doorstep and increasing public awareness of a tragically failed FDA approval process.

After working for over two years to raise the alarms about Metal on Metal implants putting highly toxic Chromium and Cobalt ions into blood, tissue, nerves, muscles and vital organs, .... finally CU has proactively and powerfully taken up this important MDUFA issue for Patient Safety.

Lobbyist and Corporate payoffs to Congress dominates High Risk Medical Device testing processes. FDA has been "shackled" with laws that DO NOT protect people from being used as "test animals."
Time for a major change. Stay the course, CU. You've suggested workable, effective improvements.

In my April 23 blog I link to a August 2008 article in AAOS(American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons "Value of Joint Registries". The U.S. has no hip/knee registry. The Swedish Registry cut failures from 17 to 7%. Reducing U.S. joint replacement failures by just 1% would save $30 million. The cost of a registry would be $2-3 Million. We don't have a registry because those profiting from implants (failed or successful) have invested in lobbying Congress and advertising rather than in patient safety. This is not sustainable. I am grateful to Consumers Union and advocacy partners for their efforts to educate and activate the public on this significant national challenge.
